The Track: The tack
at Dove is unique. First of all, it's just one of two concrete tracks on the
circuit. It also is very steeply banked.
The turns are banked at 24 degrees and the straights at 9. With the
straightaways banked so sharply, drivers will feel the sensation of
"diving" in to a corner.
Riding up against the wall down the straight and cutting the car to the
bottom, will give some the sensation of a roller coaster drop. After the driver gets the car to roll the
bottom, the car will seemingly go "up the hill" on corner exit. The driver will climb the banking on the exit
of the corner. The constant ups and downs of the corners will make the drivers
feel like they have a ridden a roller coaster with 800 drops and hills.
What To Expect: Hendrick Motorsports is on a roll. The New York Yankees of NASCAR have won three
straight races (counting the All-Star event) and have been up front all
season. The Hendrick roster has a
combined 11 wins at Dover (Johnson-6, Gordon-4, Earnhardt Jr.-1) and they will
be back up front this weekend, I'm sure.
The cars of Roush/Fenway Racing are usually the class of the
field. Matt Kenseth, Greg Biffle and
Carl Edwards put on a fantastic show a few years back racing for the lead. I
fully expect the winner to come from one of these three cars.
There also seems to be a big one at Dover. Much like the restrictor plate tracks, cars can't get away from each other at Dover. Let's hope we don't see something like this, this weekend.
Dark Horse: Martin Truex Jr.
- Truex won his only career race at Dover in 2007 and has been close a
couple of times this season. The entire operation at Michael Waltrip Racing has
been strong so far in 2012 and Truex could take the team back to victory lane.
Pick: Matt Kenseth. - Kenseth made his fist career start at
Dover, (He scored a top 10 subbing for Bill Elliott) and has won a couple of
times at the Monster Mile. The Roush-keteers will be up front and I think the
2012 Daytona 500 winner gets another win in Delaware this weekend.
