How'd you become a fan?: Part 1

People.

Friends, family, celebrities, just about anyone can influence you into becoming a fan of a certain team.

Plain and simple.

Or so it seems.

If your parents raised you as Cubs fans, you might be stuck with the curse too.

If you hang around friends that are Cowboys fans, you just might turn into one.

Or, you could do just the opposite.

So do you cave and become a fan of a friend’s team because you like them, or do you stand out and pick the rival?

Personally, I think it has to do with your personality. If you’re a people pleasing person, you might go with the crowd. Otherwise, you might become a fan of the rival just to get under their skin.

The danger here is if you and your influential person or group grow apart, your love for the team remains. Unless it’s really ugly, then you might hate the team as well.

Or you might cause the dissension by becoming a fan of the rival and ruining the relationship.

However, it’s a risk some people have to take.

People are important, but this is sports. I’m kidding, but really.

Besides, where’s the fun in cheering for the team your friends pull for?

Parents are another issue. If you’re raised a die-hard fan of a team, you don’t have much hope in choosing for yourself.

Friendly competition, if there is such a term, is essential.

If no one pulled for the other team, it wouldn’t be much of a game now would it?

Keep an eye out for part two coming soon here on the Sports Cafe.
